What is the aim of basketball?

The main objective of basketball is to score points by throwing the basketball into a hoop. The team with the most points at the end of the game, wins.

To achieve this, basketball players can move the ball by passing or dribbling. Basketball games are typically made up of 4×12 minute quarters.

What is a tip off?

Basketball games are started with a jump ball/tip off whereby the referee throws the ball into the air and 2 players from opposite teams jump to receive it for their team.

What are the positions in basketball?

A majority of basketball games comprise of 2 teams, made up of 5 players each. The different positions are:

  • Point guard
  • Defensive guard
  • Centre
  • Offensive guard
  • Defensive guard

How do you score in basketball?

There are 3 different ways to score points in basketball. A basket scored from outside of the arc results in 3 points.

A basket scored from inside the arc count for 2 points, and scoring a free throw is 1 point.

What is the shot clock on basketball?

In basketball games teams have 24 seconds to take their shot at the basket. If the ball fails to go into the basket then the shot clock resets for another 24 seconds.

However, if the team is unable to take the shot, then the ball is turned over.

What are the fouls in basletball?

Travelling = If the player takes more than 1 step without bouncing the ball.

Double dribble = The player dribbles, stops the ball with 2 hands, and then dribbles again.

Goaltending = A defensive player interferes with the ball as it is in a downward flight above the ring.

Back court violation = After the basketball passes the halfway line of the court, the offensive team cannot take the ball back to their own half.
